Restoration

Regrouting on Long Island

Regrouting can bring an older tile job back to life — when the tile and substrate underneath are still solid.

What regrouting actually involves

Removing the existing grout to a safe depth without damaging tile edges, cleaning the joints, and installing new grout selected for the application. In wet areas, we replace grout in corners with proper silicone — those joints are not supposed to be grout.

When regrouting is enough

If the tile is well bonded and the substrate is intact, regrouting can refresh the surface and add years of life. If tiles are loose or the substrate is moving, regrouting alone is not the answer.

FAQ

Regrouting — Frequently Asked Questions

Can regrouting stop my shower from leaking?
Not by itself. If a shower is leaking, the membrane behind the tile is what matters. Regrouting can refresh the look but will not fix a leak that is coming from a failed system behind the wall.
How long does regrouting take?
Most bathrooms can be regrouted in 1–2 days, depending on the size and how much old grout has to be removed.
When is regrouting enough vs. when do I need to retile?
If the tile itself is solid and the grout is just stained, cracked, or pulling out at the joints, regrouting is a great low-cost refresh. If the tile is loose, hollow-sounding, or the substrate behind it is failing, regrouting is just a band-aid.
Can grout color be changed?
Yes — when we regrout, we can pick any new color you want. Going darker is easy; going lighter takes more grout removal to avoid old color showing through.
Should I use epoxy grout?
For showers, kitchens, and floors that get heavy use — yes, often. Epoxy grout is more stain-resistant, harder, and never needs sealing. It costs more and is harder to install (less working time), but it’s genuinely worth it in wet areas.
