Ask what is behind the tile, not just the tile
Tile is the visible part. The substrate, waterproofing, and prep are what decide whether the job lasts. When you talk to a contractor, ask what cement board they use, what waterproofing system, and how they handle inside corners. If you do not get specifics, that is a sign.
Get clarity on waterproofing in showers
Every shower needs a real waterproofing system — either a sheet membrane (Schluter-Kerdi style) or a quality liquid membrane. Both work. What does not work is tile-on-greenboard or tile-on-bare-backer with no membrane. Ask the question directly.
Check that prep is included
A quote that does not include substrate prep is a quote that will get bigger on the job site. Subfloor leveling, crack isolation, or self-leveling pours should be addressed in writing, not assumed.
Ask how they handle inside corners
Inside corners — wall-to-wall, wall-to-floor, wall-to-tub — should be silicone, not grout. Grout in those corners cracks because the planes move. A contractor who grouts corners has not learned this yet.
Look at recent work, especially repair calls they have done
Anyone can show pretty pictures of new tile. Ask what they have repaired and what they have torn out. Contractors who have rebuilt failed showers have a much better understanding of what fails and why.
Confirm timeline expectations
A full custom shower takes 4–7 working days. A bathroom floor takes 2–3. Anyone promising overnight magic is cutting corners. Cure times for waterproofing and grout are not negotiable.
Trust how they communicate
Contractors who explain things clearly upfront usually communicate well during the project too. Vague answers, evasive language, or refusal to put scope in writing are red flags.
