Natural Stone Tile Installation on Long Island

Natural stone has character and depth that synthetic tile can not match. It also has variation, porosity, and sealing requirements that have to be respected.

Stone types we install

Travertine, limestone, slate, marble, and quartzite. Each one has its own density, finish, and sealing schedule. We talk through what each material will actually live like in your home before quoting.

Layout planning with natural stone

Because each piece of stone is different, we lay tile out dry before setting it. We mix from multiple boxes to spread variation evenly and avoid clusters of dark or light pieces in one area.

FAQ

Natural Stone Tile Installation — Frequently Asked Questions

Is natural stone good for a shower floor?
It can be, with the right finish and proper sealing. We will recommend or steer away based on the specific stone.
What natural stones do you install?
Marble, travertine, limestone, slate, granite, and onyx are the most common. Each behaves differently — slate is very durable for floors and entryways, travertine is great for bathrooms, onyx is best for a feature wall or vanity wall.
Do natural stones need different setting methods?
Yes. Some translucent stones (onyx, certain marbles) require white thinset so the substrate doesn’t shadow through. Heavy stones often need a stronger bonding mortar. We size the thinset to the tile and stone type — it’s one of the install details that separates real natural stone work.
How long will natural stone last?
Properly installed and maintained, decades. The natural-stone work on historic Long Island homes is often original. Modern thinset and sealers actually make today’s installs more durable than 100-year-old ones.
Is natural stone more expensive than porcelain?
Usually yes — both the material and the install. Stone takes more time to set (fragile edges, more careful cuts), and it requires sealing. The trade-off is character and feel that porcelain cannot fully replicate.
