Tub Surround Tile Installation on Long Island

A tile tub surround is a budget-friendly way to refresh a bathroom — when it is built on the right substrate and waterproofed properly.

Luxurious bathroom featuring ornate patterned tiles, a sleek bathtub, and modern fixtures.

What a proper tile tub surround includes

Cement board over framing, waterproofing over the cement board, tile set in proper thinset, grout in the field, and color-matched silicone in every change-of-plane corner — including the seam between the tile and tub.

  • Cement board substrate (not drywall)
  • Sealed seams and corners
  • Waterproofing across the full wet wall
  • Clean cuts around plumbing fixtures
  • Silicone, not grout, in inside corners

Tile choices for tub walls

Subway tile in 3x6 or 4x12 stays popular for classic Long Island bathrooms. Large-format porcelain in a vertical layout is a clean modern look. Patterned tile works well as an accent strip behind the showerhead.

What we do not do

We do not tile tub surrounds directly to green drywall. That is a common shortcut that ends in failure. The substrate has to support a wet environment.

FAQ

Tub Surround Tile — Frequently Asked Questions

Can you tile over my existing tub surround tile?
In most cases we recommend removing it first. We can not confirm what is behind it, and tile over tile creates trim, plumbing, and height issues.
Do you replace the tub?
We coordinate with a licensed plumber for tub replacement. Once the tub is in, we handle the surround.
Can you tile around an existing tub or do I need a new one?
Either works. We can tile a tub surround around an existing tub if it’s in good shape, or coordinate with a plumber to set a new tub first. We seal the tub-tile joint with color-matched silicone (not grout), which is critical for preventing leaks at the most vulnerable seam in the bathroom.
Should the tile run all the way to the ceiling?
It’s a style choice with a practical layer. Floor-to-ceiling tile around a tub looks high-end and protects more of the wall from shower spray. Three-quarter-height tile is fine too — we just install proper backer board and waterproofing wherever the tile stops.
What tile size works best for a tub surround?
3x12 subway, 4x12 subway, and large-format porcelain (12x24 and up) are all common Long Island bathroom looks. Stone-look porcelain has gotten very good in the last few years and we install a lot of it for a high-end finish at a reasonable price.
How long does a tub surround tile job take?
A standard tub surround typically takes 2–3 working days, plus 24–48 hours before you can use the shower while caulk and grout cure properly.
