What a proper tile tub surround includes
Cement board over framing, waterproofing over the cement board, tile set in proper thinset, grout in the field, and color-matched silicone in every change-of-plane corner — including the seam between the tile and tub.
- Cement board substrate (not drywall)
- Sealed seams and corners
- Waterproofing across the full wet wall
- Clean cuts around plumbing fixtures
- Silicone, not grout, in inside corners
Tile choices for tub walls
Subway tile in 3x6 or 4x12 stays popular for classic Long Island bathrooms. Large-format porcelain in a vertical layout is a clean modern look. Patterned tile works well as an accent strip behind the showerhead.
What we do not do
We do not tile tub surrounds directly to green drywall. That is a common shortcut that ends in failure. The substrate has to support a wet environment.
