Mosaic Tile Installation on Long Island

Mosaic tile is the secret weapon of detailed tile work. It follows shower slopes, frames niches, and breaks up large fields with personality.

Where mosaic tile is used

Shower pans (because the small format follows the drain slope), niche backs as a focal point, kitchen backsplash accent strips, fireplace surrounds, and accent borders in floors.

Installing mosaic well

Mosaic sheets are forgiving in some ways and unforgiving in others. The seam between sheets has to look like the seam inside a sheet. That takes alignment and patience.

FAQ

Mosaic Tile Installation — Frequently Asked Questions

Can you build a mosaic shower floor?
Yes. Mosaic shower floors are the standard because the small pieces follow the slope to the drain.
Where do mosaics look best?
Shower floors (they grip and follow drain slope), shower niches (clean focal point), kitchen backsplash accents, bathroom feature walls, and fireplace surrounds. They’re also great for transitions between different tile fields.
Are glass mosaics safe in a shower?
Yes, when set with white thinset and grouted properly. Glass mosaics are non-porous, so they’re actually one of the most water-friendly materials in a shower. The install takes longer because each mesh sheet has to be aligned with its neighbors, but the result is dramatic.
How do you grout mosaic tile?
Carefully. Mosaic has many more grout joints per square foot than standard tile, so unsanded grout (for joints under 1/8") or epoxy grout is usually the right call. We pay extra attention to wiping schedule — over-wiping a mosaic can pull grout out of the joints.
Are mosaics more expensive to install?
Per square foot, usually yes — more time per area, more grout, more layout planning. But the area where you use them is usually small (a niche, a shower floor, a backsplash accent), so the total project cost impact is moderate.
